Full Professor at Federal University of Paraná, Aldo Zarbin is a permanent member of the Brazilian Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK), former General Secretary (2012-2014), and past President (2016-2018) of Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). His main scientific interests are the synthesis, characterization, study of properties and applications of different nanomaterials, as carbon nanotubes, metal nanoparticles, Prussian-blue analogues, and conducting polymer-based nanocomposites; their preparation as thin films and their application in energy (batteries, supercapacitor, photovoltaics, H2 generation), sensors and catalysts.

Thesis title: Study of graphene and two-dimensional materials by scanning probe microscopy.

In this work, thin films of graphene and other two-dimensional materials (pure or in the form of nanocomposites with conductive polymers or with metallic nanoparticles) will be studied using the SPM to elucidate their physical and chemical properties.

Thesis title: Thin and tranparent films of gold nanoparticles and carbon nanostructures obtained at liquid-liquid interfaces: preparation, characterization and application as SERS and EC-SERS substrates.

In this work, we aims to study the synthesis of thin films of rGO/AuNPs and CNT/AuNPs at liquid-liquid interfaces, and its application as SERS and EC-SERS biosensors for detection of pesticides, pharmaceuticals, and biological samples. After the synthesis of nanomaterials, we will carry out an optmization of the synthesis using design of experiments (DoE) to enhance the signal SERS and EC-SERS.

Thesis title: Gold nanoparticles of different sizes and formats and their nanocomposites for biosensors and energy generation.

In this work, we aim to synthesize gold nanoparticles of different sizes and formats as well as their nanocomposites for two main applications. Gold nanoparticles will be functionalized for use in biosensors and will form nanocomposites with two-dimensional materials for further application in energy generation devices.

Thesis title: Thin films and nanocomposites between carbono nanotube/Prussian Blue analog, Carbon nanotube/MOFs and rGO/MOFs for pesticide sensors

The work consists of preparing different nanocomposites formed between NTC/(A)AP, NTC/MOFs, and rGO/MOFs obtaining the film through the interfacial method and using electrochemical techniques for the formation of (A)AP and MOFs, for future application as an electrochemical sensor of pesticides.
